FMP Week 1 : Research Question

Semester 2 of my MA Communication Design study has ended. I am relieved that I managed to finish all tasks required, not to mention an assignment for my optional module, Entrepreneurship.

Now it is time to concentrate on my Final Major Project. I really interested in the natural disaster, as it is a major concern in my country. We live in an area called “the ring of fire” where about 127 volcanoes located. Indonesia leads the world in many volcano statistics. It has the largest number of historically active volcanoes, which are 78 (Global Volcanism Program, 2013). These volcanoes are the result of the Australia Plate and the Pacific Plate (oregonstate.edu, 2014)

On the Indonesian Geological Survey website, we can see that Indonesia encounter earthquakes almost every day. Fortunately, most of them are just small tremors. However, it can be said that the potential threats of natural disaster especially earthquakes, volcano eruptions, and tsunamis are enormous.

My research question is “How a Design Can Influence Children Awareness to Reduce the Impact of Natural Disasters”

But why is it important for me to do this project in UK, especially for UK children?

For me, it is important for all children in the world to know and aware of natural disasters because every place is potentially threatened by natural disaster. Moreover, early age is a good phase to inject awareness for the threats as children are more likely to become the victims. Martin Bell, UNICEF Ambassador for Humanitarian Emergencies stated in his article on The Telegraph, that the number of people vulnerable to natural disasters has risen by 50,000 to 60,000 per decade since the early 1970s which at least half of their casualties are children.

However, more research should be done to find what kind of disasters that potentially threat UK. The age span of the users, and also what kind of design that would attract children curiosity to learn and to easily remember the content.

Moreover, what I will find and produce as the outcome of my project will be beneficial for my country when I bring it back when it is finished, of course with some modifications to suit local conditions.
